Why must believers battle? This was the starting question of Sunday’s sermon. We studied Jehovah-Nissi (the name for God which means the Eternally Self-existent One is My Banner). As I sat listening to the reasons we as believers must go through battles I was overcome with a sense of God’s love in sending trials. So many times I complain or even question the goodness of God without first reminding myself that even the struggles are God’s blessing.
The reasons that were given in the sermon for why we must battle were simple yet full of punch to my Christian life. We need to battle because God is at war with Satan. Due to the sin of this life there are battles that happen because we have an enemy that does not rest. He hates our God and wants to rob Him of glory. So, we battle because God is at war, but I’m so thankful I am on the winning side. I will keep on fighting till the end.
We must battle because we are prone to forget God’s faithfulness. A quote from Pastor was that “battling for souls puts our priorities in the correct order”. We must fight the battles in our lives to see God at work and his faithfulness. And we must battle because it reminds us that God is there.
Another reason we must battle is because we need an exile mindset. “We are either fighting sin, or we are serving sin.”John Piper talks about cultivating an exile mindset this way, ” What this does mainly is sober us up and wake us up so that we don’t drift with the world and take for granted that the way the world thinks and acts is the best way. We don’t assume that what is on TV is helpful to the soul; we don’t assume that the priorities of advertisers is helpful to the soul; we don’t assume that the strategies and values of business and industry are helpful to the soul. We don’t assume that any of this glorifies God. We stop and we think and we consult the Wisdom of our own country, heaven, and we don’t assume that the conventional wisdom of this age is God’s wisdom. We get our bearings from God in his word. When you see yourself as an alien and an exile with your citizenship in heaven, and God as your only Sovereign, you stop drifting with the current of the day. You ponder what is good for the soul and what honors God in everything: food, cars, videos, bathing suits, birth control, driving speeds, bed times, financial savings, education for the children, unreached peoples, famine, refugee camps, sports, death, and everything else. Aliens get their cue from God and not the world.”
So these are the reasons we must battle as believers, but how do we battle. Thankfully God has given us everything we need to battle in His name. He has given us the strength to fight, the power of God to fight and other believers to encourage us in the fight.
So, all you believers out there. Keep fighting the good fight. God is your Banner.
